The History of Emmanuel Church
Emmanuel Episcopal Church 1772-1792
by Fred Dumschott
"The Provincial Council, in 1768, approved the proposal to construct a new church and granted a portion ofthe Court House grounds as the site upon which the church was to be constructed. The site consisted of anarea ninety feet on High Street and one hundred and twenty feet on Cross Street. James Anderson, William Bordley, Emory Sudler and James McLean were authorized to act as trustees to carry out the project. Twoyears later an additional three hundred and sixty pounds were made available to complete the church and toerect a fence around the burial grounds.... The records show that the rental of pews in the new Chapel began August 14, 1772, which is taken as the official date of the completion of the building. "
With these words, Fred Dumschott explains the significance of the year 1772 in Emmanuel's history. The parish celebrated the bicentennial of this occasion in 1972, and Fred Dumschott wrote this history of our church.
