WD14 The Sixth Beatitude
(Pearce Window)

C. Willet Studio, Philadelphia, 1920s

DESCRIPTION:

This window depicts the artist's vision of the Sixth Beatitude “Blessed are the Pure in Heart, for they shall see God.”  This is the second window in the matched set of two Pearce endowments.  Under a similarly ornate Gothic arch, an angel lifts a gold crown to a three-domed Romanesque basilica.  The center dome is brightly illuminated by a ray of light from above.

INSCRIPTION:

The inscription comes from Matthew 5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God.”

NAMEPLATE:                                      In Memory of

Eunice. R. Pearce

Beloved Wife of

James Alfred Pearce,

July 5 1843     December 23, 1920.”

ICONOLOGY:

The illuminated basilica represents heaven, the City of God.  It would be no great stretch to think of the three domes in the City of God as a metaphor of the Holy Trinity with God the Father represented by the shaft of light at the center. The angel presenting the crown symbolizes the Pure in Heart receiving entry into heaven where they shall see God.
